The article addresses the nuances of the legal status of journalists during international armed conflicts. It underscores that media representatives in hazardous assignments are categorized as civilians and are protected under international humanitarian law, provided they refrain from military participation. he modern definition of «journalist» extends beyond traditional media personnel to include digital media journalists, bloggers, freelancers, and media-focused community activists who engage with a public audience. Present international humanitarian law does not specify exclusive protective measures for journalists, albeit credentials or specific press insignia recommended by humanitarian organizations serve as provisional safeguards. A journalist’s protection can be compromised when in proximity to active combat zones or within military formations where differentiation between combatants and civilians becomes challenging. he article highlights the urgency for further endeavors towards formulating a Convention for the protection of journalists during armed conflicts and the refinement of monitoring mechanisms to ensure adherence to existing international humanitarian law through collaborative efforts of the journalistic community and international human rights entities.
